Spilled water or liquid in computer? 5 Do’s and Don’ts

You’ve spilled coffee, water or soda in your laptop computer or other electronic device. It does happen and we see it often!  First all is not lost, and if you follow some simple steps you can increase the likelihood of ensuring that your device will operate without future issues.

  1. Do Not Turn on your laptop or device if it is off. If your laptop is on, power it down and remove any peripherals power cords and anything that you can easily remove to let them dry.
  2. Do turn the laptop over and remove the back covers and even the back case that encloses the laptop. This will allow the laptop to dry and water to drain. If you can, take out the Hard Drive or Memory cards, Wifi card or any components that you feel comfortable removing to allow for more drying or air flow to help speed up the drying process.
  3. Carefully dab the cards or components with a towel or dry with blow dryer (on cool setting!) or canned air. If you see water, gently take a paper towel and dab the water to soak it up. Keep the laptop turned upside down to let water drain from the keyboard. For desktop or tower systems remove the covers and perform the same procedures.
  4. Do Not use anything hot like a blow dryer on a hot setting to help dry the computer. Do use a blow dryer on a cool setting or canned air to blow the water or other liquid out. You can use the cool setting on the entire computer especially the keyboard to help push the water out and dry.
  5. You can also put the laptop in a bed of rice too. This can help just as long as you do not get rice stuck in the laptop obviously. Most important let the laptop dry for 24 hours before turning it back on.

Lastly if the laptop does not turn on after performing these procedures please contact us or another professional to address the issues.
